Parking Meter Changes as of 2-13-09
Changes to Begin February 13th and Be Completed by Mid-March
From February 13th to Mid-March, the City of Chicago’s parking meter concessionaire will begin changing meter rates and times of required operation starting with the Loop area. The changes to Chicago’s meters were approved as part of the City’s $1.15 billion agreement with winning bidder Chicago Parking Meters, LLC.
Motorists are encouraged to take note of posted meter rates and required hours of operation. Meter holidays have also been discontinued. Motorists are only required to pay meters based on posted signage. Parking meters in the 44th Ward will not be switching to 24 hours of operation
This agreement also mandates the private operator to make system upgrades in the near future that will provide cashless payment options. By the middle of 2011, all meters must have both cash and cashless payment options.
Meters outside of the Loop will change from .25, .50 or .75 cents to $1.00 in 2009. This rate also includes metered parking lots owned by the City. Changes in Lincoln Park are scheduled for completion by February 19, 2009, and the rest of the north side is scheduled to be completed by February 28, 2009.
